ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

MISSION
To graduate students who possess the skills, knowledge and professional values required for an entry-level sonographer to serve the needs of the community.
GOALS
The program will solicit guidance and feedback for communities of interest through the program’s Advisory Board. The program will provide an environment that promotes the success of the student .The program will provide employers with graduates who possess critical thinking skills and problem solving abilities.
ADMISSION POLICIES
Applicants must be 18 years of age. They must be able to bend, stoop and lift 35 pounds. The applicant must have excellent hand/eye coordination and dexterity. They must also be able to read fine print and see at a distance. The applicant must be able to respond to auditory communication and communicate orally. They must be mentally, physically and emotionally capable of meeting the demands of sonography.
Application packets for admission to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program are available by contacting Hillyard Technical Center. All information must be completed and returned by January 15th. This includes: $50.00 application/Assessment fee, Hillyard application, documentation of observation hours and a summary of the observation experience, one page essay (double spaced) of why you are applying for the program, three reference forms, a confidential release waiver, a criminal check authorization and $13.00 processing fee, an official high school transcript plus transcripts from all post-secondary education facilities attended even if a degree was not awarded. After the application has been returned, a pre-entrance test will be scheduled. The applicant will be notified by mail of the results. After the test results have been determined, an interview may be scheduled. The applicant will be notified of the interview date by phone. If an applicant is unable to meet either of these dates, he/she must notify the school prior to the scheduled time to reschedule. The students selected for the program will be notified by the end of March. The selection process is competitive. Alternates will be chosen for each sonography program. The alternates may be called for admission up through the first week of class. In the event the selection committee is presented with a tie amongst applicant’s scores, application submittal date will be the tiebreaker.
Non-English-speaking students and students with English as a second language shall meet the same admission requirements as other students. Non-English-speaking students must pass the English proficiency examination as part of the application for admission into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. The verbal skills of students with English as a second language shall be evaluated during their personal interview. If it is assessed that the student does not speak English proficiently the student will be referred to Adult Basic Education for evaluation and English proficiency testing.
Upon selection but prior to admittance into the program, a physical examination indicating the physical capabilities to complete the program and a negative drug screen are required. Forms may be obtained from Hillyard Technical Center.
A criminal background check will be completed via the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Criminal Records and Identification Division. Prior to placement of a student with the clinical site the school must obtain in writing from the Department of Social Services notice that the student does not appear on the employee dis-qualification list as provided in R.S. MO 43.54.
No advanced placement is awarded. Students wanting to transfer from another school must take the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program in its entirety. The program is 18 months in length including holidays and vacation time. Sonography students will be participating in class and clinicals on opposing days. Times may vary when assigned to clinical areas. Clinical days are usually 9 hour days. Class times may vary depending on program.
MISCELLANEOUS
There is no housing provided by the school. Students are responsible for their own health care. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify; applications are available at the school. The school arranges malpractice insurance and required vaccinations.
